Block and Estate Management is about the minutia done well: the role of a Managing Agent is technical, administrative, practical and political. It takes joined up thinking from a multi-disciplined team with one eye on the strategic long term plan and with sufficient resource to react to whatever is necessary day-to-day: the skills that block and estate management spans are: politics, building pathology, finance, legal knowhow and of course customer service too.

As a leading Managing Agent, we are a one-stop-property shop. We understand that our role is sometimes signposting Clients to get expert advice and supporting them to interpret such advice and make decisions. We support and help owners reach out to government and other local services where matters are beyond our day-to-day block management remit.

History of West Ham

West Ham is situated in east London, in the borough of Newham. It is 6.1 miles from central London. During the reign of King Edgar, (r. 959-975), there was an Anglo-Saxon charter. The king granted the Manor of Ham, undivided at that time, to Ealdorman Athelstan. So, the first written use of the term was "Hamme". The place name also originates from "hamm", and means a "dry area of land between rivers or marshland." This refers to the location of the settlement within boundaries formed by the rivers Lea, Thames and Roding and their marshes.  
In 1186 "Westhamma" was the earliest use of West Ham, as different from Ham or East Ham. In medieval times, West Ham's prosperity was improved with the building of Bow Bridge around 1110, and the wealthy abbey of St. Mary Stratford Langthorne in 1135.
In 1648, one year before the end of the reign of King Charles I, (1625-1649), during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, a Royalist force of 5,600 men won a minor battle against the Roundheads, the Tower Hamlets Militia. The battle took place at Bow Bridge, and afterwards the Royalist force occupied Stratford for three days. 
During the reign of Queen Victoria, (r. 1837-1901), West Ham developed rapidly, especially from the 1840s onwards. The area became one of Victorian Britain's major manufacturing centres for pharmaceuticals, chemicals and processed foods. Despite major industrial progress, many workers lived in slum conditions, close to where they worked. Unfortunately, such conditions of severe poverty led to the outbreak of contagious diseases. 
In the 1920s and 1930s, the borough council built around 1,200 more houses, under slum clearance and road improvement schemes. However, during World War II, (1939-1945), the Germans bombed some 14,000 houses. Over a quarter of those in the borough were destroyed. The Royal Docks, Stratford railway lines and other prominent buildings, were also destroyed. West Ham was one of the worst areas affected by bombing, with up to 1,200 civilians killed.
From 1945 to 1965, the borough council enacted redevelopment and slum clearance projects in many areas; and over 9,500 dwellings were built. In recent years, a major project of regeneration has transformed West Ham. 
In 1901, West Ham station was opened by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway, on the route from Fenchurch Street to Barking. In 1948, the station became managed by British Railways; and in 1969 ownership of the station was transferred to the London Underground. Today, West Ham is on the Jubilee, District and Hammersmith & City lines on the Underground. The station is also on National Rail and Docklands Light Railway.

With my friend, I had a great visit to Arcelormittal Orbit, at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It was amazing to go by lift, up to the viewing platform, to see the 360-degree panoramic view of London. We also had a hair-raising journey down the world's longest tunnel, Slide!
 

Things to do in West Ham

Arcelormittal Orbit, at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, is the UK's tallest sculpture. It was designed by the sculptor, Sir Anish Kapoor and engineer, Cecil Balmond. At the base of the sculpture, visitors can explore the red lattice tower, as it twists and turns above. The lifts will take visitors 80m up to the viewing platforms, for a spectacular panorama of London. For daredevils, the world's longest tunnel, Slide, is 178m long, with 12 twists and turns, finishing with a devilish corkscrew section. During the descent, you can catch glimpses of the Park and London's skyline through the transparent sections, before plunging into darkness. At ArcelorMittal Orbit, events and venue hire are a great opportunity, as you journey 262 ft into the clouds, and enjoy a wonderful panorama of up to 20 miles across London. The flexible spaces can be used for weddings, canape recptions, team building, conferences, Christmas parties, dinners, corporate events and award ceremonies. The event space can accommodate up to 270 guests standing, or up to 140 seated. A wide range of entertainment is offered, including DJ's and aerial dancers suspended outside, 262 ft above the ground! A hospitality suite is available at the base of the ArcelorMittal Orbit, at The Last Drop.

Victoria Tavern, 28 High Street, West Ham, E13, is a classic Cockney pub, with a good range of drinks. For entertainment, there are DJs and televised football.
