Block and Estate Management is about the minutia done well: the role of a Managing Agent is technical, administrative, practical and political. It takes joined up thinking from a multi-disciplined team with one eye on the strategic long term plan and with sufficient resource to react to whatever is necessary day-to-day: the skills that block and estate management spans are: politics, building pathology, finance, legal knowhow and of course customer service too.

As a leading Managing Agent, we are a one-stop-property shop. We understand that our role is sometimes signposting Clients to get expert advice and supporting them to interpret such advice and make decisions. We support and help owners reach out to government and other local services where matters are beyond our day-to-day block management remit.

History of Sydenham

Sydenham is located in south-east London. The original name comes from Old English: in 1206 the area was known as Chipeham, and then named as Shippenham. 
In Medieval times, Sydenham was heavily wooded, with only a few cottages in the woods, set along a rough, basic road. The locals grazed cattle, sheep and pigs, and collected wood for fuel, and drank cider from apple and pear orchards. 
At the eastern end of Sydenham Road, Place House was built, circa 1580, for the Earl of Sussex. The Manor of Sydenham was an administrative centre, which served as a large agricultural estate. This dominated the economy of the area, from the Medieval period until the 17th century. 
In 1615, locals of Sydenham organised a petition and marched to the City of London, as a protest, to persuade King James I to prevent the enclosure of the common. Their protest proved successful, and the locals continued to use the land.

The Greyhound Pub at Sydenham is a delightful experience for anyone who enjoys a Sunday roast. I thoroughly enjoyed my well-done steak, with a good selection of vegetables, potatoes and gravy. I was impressed with the drinks menu, which had a great choice of options.
 

Things to do in Sydenham

Sydenham Hill Wood and Cox's Walk, can be found at Crescent Wood Road, Sydenham Hill, London, SE26. This is a nature reserve, owned by the London Wildlife Trust. Sydenham Hill Wood is part of the largest remaining piece of land of the old Great North Wood, a vast area that once stretched from Deptford to Selhurst. The wood is home to more than 200 species of trees and plants, rare fungi, insects, birds and woodland mammals.
 

Sydenham - Cultural Scene

The mid 19th century brought Sydenham the benefits of shops, inns, schools, and churches. The Golden Lion, originally an inn, became a Music Hall Palace of Varieties. 
Parks were established: The Recreation Ground (Mayow Park) in 1878 and Home Park in 1901. The steel magnate Andrew Carnegie sponsored seven new libraries, for the newly established Borough of Lewisham. All of these libraries remain, to this day. 
The Thorpes Estate was an Edwardian development of six roads, constructed from 1901 to 1914. The original estate was designated as Sydenham Thorpes Conservation Area in 2001. The residential and commercial buildings maintain a consistency, uniformity and cohesiveness in features and details. The style of building was inspired by Queen Anne, and led to the Georgian revival in architecture.
Sydenham Railway station remains to this day, as the focus for the community.
