Block and Estate Management is about the minutia done well: the role of a Managing Agent is technical, administrative, practical and political. It takes joined up thinking from a multi-disciplined team with one eye on the strategic long term plan and with sufficient resource to react to whatever is necessary day-to-day: the skills that block and estate management spans are: politics, building pathology, finance, legal knowhow and of course customer service too.

History of Ickenham

Ickenham is situated north-west of London, in the borough of Hillingdon. It is 17.5 miles from the centre of London. Origins of the name means "homestead/village of Tic(c)a". The T was lost in the 13th-14th centuries, because of confusion with the Middle English word for "at". During the reign of William I, "The Conqueror", (1066-1087), the Domesdsay Book, published in 1086, recorded the name "Ticheham". 
An archeological survey of Ickenham, found a system of Roman fields, along with pottery fragments, dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries. 
There were two manors of Ickenham and Swakeleys. The original lord of the manor of Ickenham was Geoffrey de Mandeville, from whom it passed to William de Brock, and then in 1334, to John Charlton whose son owned Swakeleys from 1350. By the mid 14th century, Ickenham was owned by the Shorediche family, who retained possession until 1819. Swakeleys was owned by the Swalcliff family from the 14th to 15th centuries. Thomas Swalcliff was the Member of Parliament for Middlesex and Speaker of the House of Commons in the 15th century. He died in 1465, and the manor was passed to his son Sir Richard. In 1485, he died in the Battle of Bosworth Field, on the side of King Richard III, (r. 1483-1485), who was defeated and killed. The victors were represented by the new King, Henry VII, (r. 1485-1509).
The church of St. Giles was originally built around 1335, and was extended over the centuries. Today, it remains open to the public. During the Victorian era, in 1866, a more recent acquisition was the Ickenham Village Pump: this was used by villagers with no water supply to their homes, up to 1914. In recent years, the pump was refurbished, and remains Grade II listed. Next to the pump, is the Coach and Horses public house. The building dates to the 16th century, but it was not until 1759, that it was first licensed to sell alcohol. 
Until the early 20th century, Ickenham was a village, and remained a largely agricultural community. In 1905, during the Edwardian era, Ickenham station was opened on the Metropolitan Railway. In 1910, the station was linked with the District Line. Since 1933, the District Line services were replaced by Piccadilly Line trains. The Underground station we know today, is on the Metropolitan and Piccadilly Lines.  
The railway station initiated much building developments, with many commuters living in the area. For example, between 1923 and 1927, much of the Swakeleys estate was laid out as a residential surburb. However, today, buildings built from the 14th to 17th centuries remain. So, the area is a mix of old and new buildings. It is an attractive place to live, with many green spaces, and easy access to central London.

I had a good trip with my friend, to the Ickenham Miniature Railway. I never knew it existed until recently. It was great fun, and we re-lived our childhood. We found it amusing, as we felt we were far to large to ride on the miniature train!
 

Things to do in Ickenham

Ickenham Miniature Railway, 10 High Road, Ickenham, Uxbridge, UB10, has been open to the public since the 1970s. Ickenham St. Giles station is located at the headquarters of the Ickenham & District Society of Model Engineers. Most of the miniature train locomotives are privately owned by members of the society. The public who ride, are much larger than the trains! The circuit has the main passenger terminus of the railway: with one platform and two departure platforms. Incoming passengers unload their passengers at the arrival platform, before proceeding onto the turntable, where the whole train is turned and sent to one of the departure platforms, ready for the all the next passengers.
 

Ickenham - Cultural Scene

BurgerBey, 51 Swakeleys Road, Ickenham, Uxbridge, UB10, specialises in Halal burgers. There is a good choice of beef, chicken, vegetarian and vegan, all with side options. Frankfurters are offered; and house specials include chilli con carne, grilled chicken breast, beef patty and chicken and waffle. Extra toppings and sauces are available on request. All desserts are served with vanilla ice cream. These include Turkish Baklava, chocolate fudge cake, brownie slice, banoffee pie, cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding and lotus biscoff bar. There are a good range of soft drinks and hot drinks. Milkshakes have a great variety of flavours: twix, oreo, bounty, mint aero, daim, lion, reeses, vanilla, kinder bueno white, snickers, skittles, crunchie, kinder bueno, hershey's mars, strawberry and banana.
